PacketLight: Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers from our network expert on PacketLight DWDM, Layer-1 encryption, dark fibre and working with Cloudtronics.
Is Cloudtronics an authorized PacketLight distributor?
Yes. Cloudtronics is a certified PacketLight Networks partner and authorized distributor. Buying through us gives you local support, warranty-backed solutions and direct access to the manufacturer. Our network experts handle the whole project, from concept and design through deployment, training and 24/7 support, with offices in Australia, Indonesia and the USA.
What is DWDM and how does it work?
DWDM stands for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing. It sends many independent data channels over a single fiber pair, each on its own wavelength (color) of light. A multiplexer combines the wavelengths at one end and a demultiplexer separates them at the other, so you can multiply the capacity of fiber you already own or lease, from 10G up to hundreds of gigabits per wavelength, without laying new cable.
Is DWDM Layer 1 or Layer 2?
DWDM is a Layer 1 (physical layer) technology. It transports light on the fiber and is transparent to the protocols it carries, so Ethernet, Fibre Channel and OTN services can share the same fiber. That's also why PacketLight encrypts at Layer 1: every bit on the wavelength is protected, whatever the protocol.
What is dark fiber and what is it used for?
Dark fiber is optical fiber that is installed but not yet lit by any equipment. Organizations lease or buy it to build private, high-capacity links between their own sites, such as data centers, trading floors, campuses or government facilities. You light dark fiber with your own equipment, and PacketLight DWDM lets one fiber pair carry many separate 10G, 100G or 400G services at once, so you get far more value from every fiber you lease.
What is the difference between CWDM and DWDM?
Both send multiple wavelengths over one fiber. CWDM (Coarse WDM) uses widely spaced channels (20 nm), supports up to 18 channels and suits shorter, lower-cost links. DWDM uses tightly spaced channels in the C-band, supports far more channels and higher speeds, and can be amplified with EDFAs for long-distance routes. For 100G–600G capacity, Layer-1 encryption and long reach, DWDM is the right choice. Our engineers will tell you which fits your link.
What is a muxponder in DWDM?
A muxponder aggregates several lower-speed client services into one high-capacity DWDM wavelength. A transponder maps one client signal to one wavelength. Platforms like the PacketLight PL-4000M mix 10/25/100GbE, 16/32G Fibre Channel and OTU2/OTU4 services onto 100–600 Gbps coherent uplinks, which saves wavelengths and fiber.
What is Layer-1 encryption and how is it different from IPsec or MACsec?
Layer-1 (optical) encryption protects data on the transport layer itself, below Ethernet and IP. Every bit on the wavelength is encrypted at full line rate, whatever the protocol, with negligible added latency and no loss of throughput. IPsec and MACsec work higher in the stack and add overhead. PacketLight uses GCM-AES-256 with EC Diffie-Hellman key exchange, certified to FIPS 140-2/3 Level 2.
How much capacity does the PacketLight PL-4000M support?
The PL-4000M supports up to 600G per 1U chassis, with dual CFP2-DCO or QSFP-DD coherent uplinks running at 100–600 Gbps. It combines high capacity, built-in AES-256 Layer-1 encryption and hot-swappable optics, power and fans in a compact carrier-grade unit. Ask us for the PL-4000M datasheet or a sizing for your link.
How far can a PacketLight DWDM link reach?
Reach depends on your fiber, the data rate and the modulation. PacketLight supports flexible modulation, from QPSK for long-haul routes to 16-QAM for high-capacity metro and DCI links, and EDFAs extend distance where needed. Our engineers calculate a link budget on your actual fiber route before recommending a design.
Will PacketLight work with our existing fiber and equipment?
Yes. PacketLight is legacy-friendly. It interoperates with third-party transponders, amplifiers and existing fiber plant, so you can upgrade capacity or add encryption without a full rip-and-replace.
How is a PacketLight network monitored and managed?
PacketLight gives full service and OTN visibility and integrates with the Viavi ONMSi Optical Network Management System. ONMSi adds full optical-layer monitoring with real-time alarms, analytics and fault isolation, all without affecting the transport wavelength. For high-security links, VIAVI FTH-5000 real-time fiber monitoring can also detect fiber breaks, physical disturbances and potential tapping attempts.
How do you design for redundancy and zero downtime?
We combine EDFAs, optical switching, 1+1 OTN protection and multi-path routing to remove single points of failure. For a leading financial institution in Sydney, Cloudtronics deployed a four-path, fully redundant 400G DWDM network with Layer-1 encryption, built on the PacketLight PL-4000M with PL-1000IL and PL-300 for optical switching and amplification, and designed to stay up through multiple concurrent fiber failures.
Do you support PacketLight projects outside Australia?
Yes. Clients across Australia and Southeast Asia rely on Cloudtronics. We have offices in Sydney and Melbourne, an office in Indonesia, and in the USA an office in Houston and an R&D lab in Fremont.
How much does a PacketLight DWDM solution cost?
Pricing depends on the number of sites, link distances, capacity per link, protection (redundancy) and whether you need Layer-1 encryption. Send us those details through the quote request form. It takes about 2 minutes. You can also call us on +1 (512) 572 3001 (USA) or +61 2 8078 2207 (Australia), and our network experts will design and price the right solution.
